Last weekend, we finally made it to Daylight Savings in the corner of the world where I reside (East Coast, USA). I don't know about you, but for me, the longer days invariably add a pep to my step. I start daydreaming about cookouts and soccer games and I've been known to prematurely purchase a pair of shorts or sandals in anticipation of all that sweet sunshine-derived vitamin D comin' my way.
I'm hardly the only one here at Rebuy who feels this way about the return of warmer winds. At the end of February, we had a fantastic experience ateTail Palm Springs that's left us giddy at what's to come in the months ahead.
Under the warm California sun we brunched, we surfed, and we made great connections with the people behind some of the most recognizable brands in ecommerce today.
Then last weekend, we hosted Momentum LA, which which brought together more than 50 ecommerce pros to talk about what's coming in 2026 for the world of ecom. Thank you so much to our sponsors Hue., Kustomer, Pacific IQ, Rivo, Fluent, Inc and Syncly (YC W23)!
Across both events, people were eager to discuss how building a great customer experience has become a much bigger job than it used to be.
Today’s stores have to balance discovery, merchandising, retention, and post-purchase experiences in ways that weren’t necessary even a few years ago.
In this edition of Touchpoint, we’re taking a closer look at what the next phase of the online shopping experience looks like, and sharing some practical advice that will make your Shopify store feel fast, intuitive, and built to convert.

The future of ecommerce: what the data is already telling us
Customer experience has long been important in ecommerce, but new data suggests it’s quickly becoming the central driver of growth. Gorgias recently analyzed insights from 10,000 ecommerce brands and conversations with industry leaders to understand how the next phase of online retail is taking shape.
Here are some key takeaways:
Customer experience is no longer confined to post-purchase support. Today’s CX strategy touches the entire lifecycle, from the first product question a shopper asks to post-purchase follow-ups and repeat purchases. Brands that treat customer experience as a continuous journey rather than a helpdesk function are seeing stronger loyalty and lifetime value.
Automation is reshaping how CX teams operate. AI and automation are allowing brands to respond to customers much faster and at a much larger scale. Automated systems can now handle large volumes of routine inquiries simultaneously, giving human agents more time to focus on complex issues and high-value customer interactions.
Teams and tools are converging. Historically, ecommerce teams handled merchandising and sales while support teams handled issues after the purchase. That separation is starting to disappear as tools and data unify customer conversations, product information, and order history into one workflow.
Customer support is becoming a revenue channel. In many ecommerce businesses, support used to be treated purely as a cost center. But increasingly, support teams are helping shoppers discover products, answer pre-purchase questions, and close sales. The line between “support” and “sales” is starting to blur as conversational experiences become part of the buying journey.
What this means: The brands pulling ahead are treating customer experience as an integrated system that spans discovery, purchase, and post-purchase support. They're turning every interaction into an opportunity to guide, reassure, and ultimately convert the customer.
What high-converting Shopify stores are doing differently
The result is a common gap: brands work hard to get shoppers to the product page, but the buying journey itself doesn’t do enough to guide them toward checkout. Building a high-converting Shopify store means paying just as much attention to the experience of purchasing as to the tactics used to attract visitors in the first place.
Here are some key takeaways:
Start with a theme designed to convert. The foundation of a strong Shopify store is a theme that prioritizes clarity and usability. High-performing themes tend to include built-in conversion elements like clear call-to-action buttons, integrated upsells or cross-sells, simple navigation, and streamlined checkout experiences.
Make the path to purchase obvious. Shoppers shouldn’t have to work to figure out what to do next. Clear product pages, visible CTAs, and straightforward navigation help move customers from browsing to buying without unnecessary friction.
Use built-in merchandising opportunities. Features like upsells, cross-sells, and product recommendations help shoppers discover complementary products while they’re already in a buying mindset. When implemented thoughtfully, these moments both improve the experience and increase order value.
Treat checkout as part of the experience, not the finish line. Many stores invest heavily in discovery but leave checkout under-optimized. A fast, intuitive checkout process and opportunities to reinforce value or recommend complementary items can have a significant impact on final conversion.
What this means: The most successful Shopify stores aren’t just focused on driving traffic. They’re being intentional about how they balance discovery, merchandising, and checkout so that these elements work together to guide the shopper forward.
