It’s been a full month here at Rebuy. The StudioForty9 Excellence in Ecommerce Summit in Dublin, Ireland, Superco’s GROW Beauty event in London, and a cooking class and dinner at The Gourmandise School in Santa Monica kept our teams busy.
Myself, I've been here at home, holding down the fort and pondering widgets, which is something my own mother never did, nor her mother before her (I don't say that as a point of pride, rather as a... as a vague remark about the inexorable march of progress and technology).
Specifically, I've been pondering the impact a single well-placed widget can make in the wellbeing of an online store and, by extension, an entire community.
I have that on the brain because of the success Ceremonia, a mission-driven haircare brand, has had using our Smart Cart. They've not only boosted AOV but also given shoppers an opportunity to help plant fruit trees to support Latinx communities.
I'll have more on that below, along with some guidance and tips around how you might start using widgets not only as a means to boost your bottom line, but as a way to build a sense of community in your customer base.
Cheers,
– Alanna

When shopping starts to look like a conversation
For a long time, ecommerce has been built around pages: product pages, collection pages, checkout pages, etc., but that model is starting to shift. Not because pages are going away, but because customers are increasingly making decisions inside conversations instead of across pages.
Gorgias’ latest data shows just how quickly that change is happening and what it means for how brands should think about the shopping experience.
Here are some of the key takeaways:
Conversations are replacing the traditional path to purchase. The classic “browse → click → add to cart” journey is getting compressed into a single interaction. Customers are asking questions, getting answers, and making decisions in real time, often without ever navigating your site the way you expect.
AI is no longer a differentiator, it’s the baseline. 96% of ecommerce professionals are already using AI in some capacity, and many brands are using it across a significant portion of customer interactions. The question isn’t whether to use AI, it’s how well it’s integrated into your customer experience.
Speed is becoming a conversion lever. When shoppers get answers instantly, hesitation disappears. In fact, 93% of AI-influenced purchases happen within 48 hours of the initial interaction.
Every channel is now a storefront. Chat, SMS, email, and social aren’t just support channels anymore. 79% of brands report generating sales directly from AI-driven conversations. Wherever a customer interacts with you, they expect to be able to buy, not just ask questions.
The winning model is hybrid. AI handles speed and scale. Humans handle nuance and judgment. Brands that combine both are seeing the strongest results because they’re not forcing customers into one experience or the other.
What this means: AI has the most impact when it shows up where decisions are made. The closer it is to the point of purchase, the more it drives results.
Instead of relying on standard upsell mechanics, Ceremonia layered meaning into the moment and turned a routine cart interaction into something customers actually wanted to engage with.
Here are some of the key takeaways.
Not all upsells are created equal. Recommending the right product matters, but how it’s presented matters just as much. Ceremonia used Rebuy Smart Cart to surface relevant add-ons, but the real shift came from giving customers a reason to care about adding them. If your upsells are frequently getting ignored, it’s usually not the product that's at fault, it’s the context.
Reducing friction isn’t just about price. A lot of hesitation at checkout isn't due to money worries - it comes from uncertainty. Ceremonia reduced that hesitation by adding a purpose-driven layer, turning “should I add this?” into “this actually feels worth it.” They effectively made the decision feel better, not just cheaper.
The best-performing widgets don’t feel like widgets. As we said above, context really matters when it comes to wdigets. When upsells feel transactional, they get ignored. When they feel like a natural part of the experience, they get used. That’s the difference between something you’re constantly tweaking and something you can actually set and let run.
Small changes, compounding impact. Ceremonia focused on one key moment and made it smarter, more relevant, and more meaningful, and they got great results (+9.5% lift in AOV, +7.7% increase in cart completion, and a 6.6x ROI).
What this means: Brands don’t need more widgets, necessarily - they need better ones that are more effectively contextualized within their brand ethos. The opportunity isn’t to add complexity, it’s to rethink how your existing moments show up for customers.

RetailFest 2026 🌴 May 5–7, Gold Coast, Australia
RetailFest (by Retail Global) brings together ecommerce brands, retailers, and partners for three days of workshops, keynotes, and networking on the Gold Coast.
It’s part strategy, part hands-on learning, and part talking shop with people who get it. A good mix of practical sessions and time to connect with other teams working through the same growth questions.
If you’re looking to step away from the day-to-day and pick up a few new ideas along the way, this one’s worth a look. Check it out here.
Free CRO Masterclass with Shoplift and Rebuy May 7, 11am EST
If you run ecommerce for a skincare brand, your product pages probably have conversion problems that generic CRO advice won't fix. Trust signals, ingredient presentation, skin type personalization, routine building. These all test differently in skincare than in any other category.
This session gets into the specifics. 100+ skincare test ideas, a framework for building a testing calendar around your seasonal launches, and a roadmap template you can start filling in the same week.
Elon Musk and Sam Altman are now facing off in court over OpenAI’s shift toward a for profit model, but the bigger story is control. As AI becomes foundational to how businesses operate, the battle over who owns it and how it is monetized will shape the tools brands rely on, making partner selection a long term strategic decision rather than a short term technical one.
AI is coming for design workflows Anthropic just launched a tool that can generate full designs and assets from a prompt, and the market reacted immediately with a dip in Figma’s stock. The barrier to creating high quality creative is dropping fast, giving ecommerce teams the ability to test, iterate, and launch new ideas at a pace that was not possible before.
